June 28, 2015

We are sitting in the midst of the beautiful northwoods of Wisconsin - giant maple trees in abundance with fir trees interspersed.  We sit outside and just marvel at the surroundings.  Needless to say - we are enjoying ourselves immensly. We arrived here on Monday, the 22nd and will depart on July 20 for the Winnebago rally in Forest City, Iowa.  (We will know that little town by heart before the summer is over!)

We spent 10 days in Elgin, Illinois at the Paul Wolff Campground while visiting Ali, AJ and Don.While the northwest is drying out, the midwest is having a pretty rainy season.  One lady told Ali that she had ducks swimming in her cornfield!  We have probably experienced about 2/3 rainy days to 1/3 of sunny days.  I have enjoyed every minute of it!  After dry time in Albuquerque I can't seem to get enough rain!

We took a fun excursion to Chicago one day: Train from Elgin to Union Station (remember "The Untouchables" - we saw the famous stairway), water taxi to Navy Pier.  We were going to wander Navy Pier, but Bubba Gump stopped us.  The food was awesomely good.
We walked along the lakeshore for awhile and then caught a taxi to the Old Town Art Festival (foreign driver had no idea where we wanted to go - thank goodness he had GPS).  The art show was a little over the top, but the Old Town homes and gardens were lovely and the people watching was great fun. It was a good day.

We love to have the traditional mid-western Friday night fish fry and Ali knew the perfect place - a nifty little restaurant/bar adjacent to the Fox River in downtown Elgin - Chooch's. It's added to our list of good places to eat.  Good food, great ambiance and attentive owners.

Leaving Elgin, we drove north to the Hancock/Stevens Point KOA - a beautiful new campground at the half-way point to Woodruff, Wisconsin. This is a recommended stop if traveling in the area.

A drive thru the
tiny town of
Hancock led us to the Whistler
Mounds.

Indian Shores is filling up for the coming holiday weekend.  We plan to sit on the deck of the restaurant/bar and see if we can see a group attempting this huge Jenga game.

The deck looks out over Tomahawk Lake and is a great place for a morning cup of coffe or an evening cocktail.
